What are Ozlandish Writings?

From July 2010 to December 2014 we ran OZLAND PICTURE STORIES as described below. Sadly though the number of writers reduced over the years and we decided to call it a day. We leave these as a record of the good times we had.

Are "You" ready to challenge your writing skills? Then participate in our OZLAND Picture Stories writing series at The Ozland Art Gallery.

Each month a new picture will be picked, from our OZLAND Artist of the Month collection, with different themes. Your goal is to write a 500-1000 word... poem... essay... or story about the picture picked. This is a chance for you to challenge your writing skills each month. Story can be written in ANY genre... sci fi... romance... ghost... fantasy... fiction... non-fiction... biography... mystery... historical... whatever your writing genre... feel free to experiment. Send your writing inworld to Sven Pertelson as a notecard to have it included on the web site. We meet at the The Ozland Art Gallery each Wednesday at Noon and 6pm SLT to read the latest submissions on voice. More Information

Your Inspiration for May 2013

Nabian Nexus - part 3 - by Sven Pertelson

“Ding, Dong! Welcome lady and gentleman to Nabia. The local time is 13:05 hrs and the external temperature is stifling. Please remain seated with your seat belts fastened until the engines have stopped. Take care when opening the overheads and remember to take all your hand luggage with you. Oh, by the way, it's a really long walk to the terminal.” Stefan's smile vanished as the computer's hated voice made yet another fatuous announcement.

Melisa stood looking out the window, and chuckled. “Lisa, what’s so funny?” a voice asked behind her. Turning her head, she beckoned to Tabitha and Vanessa, “Come and see,” she laughed. “I see our most recent replacements!”

Radqua checked her patient's pulse and respiratory rate; both were within the normal range and she was in the act of noting them on her patient's chart when Cleatha walked in, looking rather agitated “What's the matter Cleatha, it's not like you to get flustered? High Elder P'lo sent me to ask you to join the meeting. Radqua frowned, “I can't leave her alone Cleatha, even though her vitals are good imagine if she woke up and there was no-one there? “I can stay and keep and eye on her if you think she should not be left alone? “Please do. I've checked her vitals, and I think they all within the normal range but please keep an eye on her temperature for me, she was very cold when we brought her in and it looked like she had been lying on the forest floor overnight.“ “How badly injured is she? “Surprisingly she doesn't seem to be badly hurt. There's a lot of bruising and she has a large bump on her head but other than that she seems to be al-right She'll probably wake up in a few hours, but she ought not be left alone in the meantime. With that Radqua pulled her cloak from it's peg wrapped it around her and swiftly left the building.

Melisa, Tabitha and Vanessa peeked around the corner, stifling giggles. Miss Gibson and Mr. Martin were walking to class, and just about to enter the ‘zone’. The three girls had set up a bucket of ice water, balanced carefully on a tree branch. When the two teachers took the next step, they would trip the wire, and the water would cascade down, drenching them. And it happened! Just as they had planned; and the reaction was priceless! Hands over mouths to keep the giggles in, the three turned and ran off, into the trees, where they collapsed in laughter.

Stefan and Stella pulled their seat harnesses tight as Alex closed the two of them into the lander module. Despite all the advances in faster than light space travel the only way of landing on and taking off from a planet had not changed in its essentials from the days of the first single stage to orbit flight of the VentureStar. In fact getting out of orbit was much the same as in the days of the Space Shuttle, a small amount of braking from the de-orbiting thrusters, surfing through the atmosphere like a meteor and then sharp gliding turns to drop to a sedate sub-sonic velocity before landing. At least with this lander they had they did have engines to enable them to pick a landing spot.

"What Am I?" by Llola Lane

"What Am I?" by Llola Lane

Ever since I can remember I've been growing. My first memories of the garden make me smile. My brothers and sisters stand next to me and they touch me. As I grow... they grow. We get bigger with each passing day. But... What Am I???

Nabian Nexus - Part 1 - by Sven Pertelson.

"Captain to the bridge, imminent orbital insertion manoeuvre." the irritatingly urbane synthesised computer voice sounded throughout the ship. Stefan Engstrom hated that voice with a passion. The very next time that he managed to get the SS Ptolemy into a decent space dock that would be the first thing on his list of repairs. At the door to the bridge the same voice announced, "Attention! Captain on the bridge." The sole occupant of the bridge remained seated and looked over her shoulder, sighed and turned back to the control panel.

The Legacy - Lillian Morpork

The Legacy - Lillian Morpork

Katy really hated going to Great Aunt Agatha’s. It used to be fun when Great Uncle Bertie was alive, full of light and colour. The gardens were masses of colour, there were forget-me-nots over half the front lawn, and morning glories growing along the fences in white, pink, purple and blue. Then, ten years ago, Uncle Bertie died, and everything changed.

Red, Purple, White, Yellow or Blue,
roses are beautiful no matter what hue.
Standing tall in the garden so grand,
they commands attention, and are anything but bland.

"Snakes" by Keisha Thorne (edited by Teri)

"Snakes" by Keisha Thorne (edited by Teri)

She walked quietly through the woods, trying to get away from what she had seen. Each careful and precise step was an effort as her mind screamed "RUN," over and over, desperately trying to persuade her to flee to safety. But her reason knew better and remained in control, knowing that running would only give her location away and bring it straight to her. A quiet, patient, stealthy walk was the only way she would be able to escape.
